Training for Regional Journalists from the Faculty of Communication

Dean of the Faculty of Communication of our University Prof. Dr. Tamella Aliyeva and Deputy Dean Assistant Professor Doctor Abdulsamet Günek gave a seminar to journalists working in the region.

A seminar program was organized for journalists in Muş and surrounding cities within the scope of the “Democracy for Media / Media for Democracy” project, which is carried out in cooperation with the Journalists' Association of Muş and the Journalists' Association of Turkey and financed by the European Union. Prof. Dr. Tamella Aliyeva made her presentations titled “Society and Media” and Assistant Professor Abdulsamet Günek made presentations titled “Creating an Agenda in Local Media with Culture and Art Journalism”. Referring to the importance of the profession of journalism in her speech, Aliyeva said that journalists are responsible for constantly improving themselves by being aware of the responsibility brought by the profession.

Pledge of Support to the Local Press

Citing examples from the world press and the Azerbaijani press, Aliyeva said that local community of Muş should support the local press. She said that as the Faculty of Communication, they are ready to provide all kinds of support for the local media of Muş to become more qualified, and that he believes that important cooperation opportunities will emerge in the future in this respect.

The Importance of Local Media was Emphasized

Günek, in his presentation titled “Creating an Agenda in Local Media”, said that a local media working within the framework of ethical practices undertakes an important function in terms of social development. Günek mentioned that local media have important functions in the world, especially in Western Europe and America, local media contribute to the solution of many problems in the region with the method of following the opinion. Saying that the local media in Turkey is not effective enough in setting the agenda, Günek stated that the most important reasons for this are the disinformation in the new media and the structural and technical problems in the local media. Günek, who also made a presentation titled Culture and Art Journalism, mentioned that culture and art journalism is a neglected field in Turkey and explained how important the issue is in terms of keeping national and local culture alive and transferring it to the next generations. Within the framework of the presentation, Günek gave information about the writing techniques of culture and art news, the resources of culture and art news and the equipment of culture and art reporters.

In the two-day program; Prof. Dr. Suat Seyahat “New Media and Alternative Approaches”, Journalist Bülent Toptan “Muş Local Press from Past to Present”, Atatürk University Communication Faculty Journalism Department Head Prof. Dr. Hakan Temiztürk “News Writing/Interview Techniques and Newspaper Design”, Journalist Faruk Aktaş “Current Issues of the Press”, MGC President Emrullah Özbey “Local Press Problems”, IPI National Committee Vice President and Journo Editor Emre Kızılkaya “Internet Journalism”, Media Trainer Yusuf Özgür Bülbül made a presentation titled “My Mobile Journal (MO-JO)”. Muş Journalists Association President Emrullah Özbey, who organized the training seminar, thanked our university's Faculty of Communication and Dean Aliyeva for their contributions to the educational activities.
